Our Key Stage 1 school curriculum.
To find out more about the curriculum our school is following please speak to your child’s class teacher. Below you will find a list of subjects available and the content of the curriculum for each subject.
Reading and Phonics
High priority is given to the teaching of reading and phonics as these two areas underpin all other curriculum areas.
Reading is taught daily through a range of strategies, so that the children develop a love of books. The children have stories and novels or poetry read aloud to them and writing and reading activities are linked and often cross curricular.
Parents and carers are aware of progress through a home school reading diary.
Phonics is taught in Key Stage One for at least 15 minutes every day and we work from variety of schemes including Letters and Sounds.
The Anderton Reading Scheme
Our reading scheme begins in Reception and offers a structured programme for all pupils up to Year 6. We have an extensive collection of books made up primarily of texts from the Oxford Reading Tree and Collins which are all colour banded and levelled.
Each pupil follows an individual programme which allows teaching staff to monitor their progress. Within the scheme we have extension books (both fiction and non-fiction) to allow the pupils to broaden their experience of reading.
Pupils work through the scheme at their own pace, with some progressing rapidly and others needing additional support.
